Balsamorhiza sagittata
Flowering in June, with stems 1 to 2 feet tall, balsamroot inhabitssagebrushflats and open forests around dry rocky ridges. Balsamroot is very showy in Grand Teton National Park in the early spring.

Stamped but postmark not showing. Dated 18/8/81.
Granada. - Alhambra Serie 45 no. 194
Courtyard of the Lions.
Message reads: "A most beautiful place built by the Moors in the 13th century. The intricate work on the walls and ceilings has to be seen to be believed. There are magnificent views to be had from the Alhambra over the lovely old port of Granada." Written by a teacher member of the family!

Nenagh

From the back of the card:
Nenagh, which is the chief town of North Tipperary, lies in a fertile plain bordered on the south by the Silvermine Mountains and on the west by the Arra Mountains. Nenagh Castle has one of the finest circular keeps in Ireland. It originally formed part of the larger castle which was built about AD 1200 by Theobald Fitzwalter. Nenagh offers the visitor a variety of beauty plus the opportunity of seeing important antiquities and magnificent ruins.

"Interesting week continues, lectures very good, swim at 9 a.m. today, tennis on Balliol grounds. Want to travel to Swansea right through by bus Sat leaving 2:15. Don't lock the door please. Love Mildred."
I wonder what summer courses Oxford were running in the summer of 1939, just before the Second World War started..

Casa Loma


Postmarked Ottawa 1983.
Casa Loma, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Known as "the House on the Hill" it was built as Sir Henry Pellatt's dream castle. Commenced in 1911 and completed in 1914 at a cost of several million dollars, it has 98 rooms and is now Toronto's foremost tourist attraction, being managed by the Kiwanis Club of West Toronto with net proceeds used for charitable work.

Il Ponte vecchio


The Ponte Vecchio in Florence, dated 1993. This card was bought by myself while on a week's holiday in Florence, not long after the Uffizi Gallery had been bombed. No doubt as a result of that, and in spite of it being August, it wasn't too terribly crowded.  The whole of the historic centre of Florence is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
